The BMJ/BMF Young Merchant Achiever Award has launched for 2014.
Without good people coming through, an industry will wither away.
However, recruitment is only part of the battle. Talent needs to be recognised and nurtured and it is this that the BMJ/BMF Young Merchant Achiever Award aims to do.
Now in its second year, the award will go to a merchant manager under 35 who has demonstrated an ability to go above and beyond in their business; bringing in new ideas that address an issue or an opportunity that really delivers results.
BMJ editor-in-chief Fiona Russell Horne says: “Tomorrow’s owners and directors are working in the business today. We need to encourage younger members of staff to really engage with, and progress through, the business. This award is designed to recognise and reward talent, initiative and the entrepreneurial spirit that is the backbone of this industry.”
BMF managing director John Newcomb says: “The BMF is committed to ensuring that talented and committed young people working within the industry are given the recognition they rightly deserve. Last year, all our entrants, not just those who made it to final few, demonstrated innovation, initiative and a determination to succeed in the merchanting industry. This award is our way of highlighting and recognising those achievements and encouraging others to do likewise.”
The winner will receive a cash prize of £2,500 and an educational trip to Sweden courtesy of timber supplier SCA Timber.

The award will be judged by a panel of experienced industry figures, representatives from BMJ, the BMF Young Merchants’ current chair, Simon Fleet.
The award will be presented at the BMF Awards night before the Members Day on September
