UK builders merchants in takeover speculation

The takeover of Cadbury by American Kraft has fuelled rumours that more UK companies, including Travis Perkins, could be eyed up by overseas companies.

Reports in The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian yesterday highlighted housebuilders Bellway, Bovis and Redrow as potential takeover targets among the housebuilders, with Travis Perkins mentioned as a possible target for European companies such as Saint Gobain.

Richard Hunter at broker Hargreaves Lansdown told The Guardian that UK companies “have rarely looked cheaper” and that building products company Sheffield Installation Group and Travis Perkins are both vulnerable, mentioning both Lafarge and Saint-Gobain.
