Timber merchant wins top business award

The award, part of the 2008 Yorkshire Awards, sponsored by AON, was in recognition of its development from a small Yorkshire firm to a major global organisation.

The Arnold Laver Group was established in 1920 after Arnold Laver had returned from WW1 and set up a timber merchant, with his first site in the Heeley area of the city.

The group now have 13 branches across the country, including sites in Bradford, Sheffield, Hull, Rainham and Leeds and turnover £110m

Managing director Andrew Laver collected the award at the ceremony in Leeds. He said: “We are delighted to receive this award especially as it has come from the people of Yorkshire, who have been extremely supportive in the work of Arnold Laver during the last 80 years.

“We have a great family business which is built on the efforts of our staff and their commitment to excellence. Through the hard work of our employees, the company has been able to expand on a huge scale and we are aiming to build on the successes already gained in our timber merchanting, leisure and property divisions.”
