Hellyer, who retired last September, after spending 66 years at Covers, said: “This is very much an emotional moment for me. It’s been a wonderful evening and I was sitting on a wonderful table”.

Whilst on stage with host Fred Dinenage, Hellyer gave the audience an insight into his time with Covers. He said that between 1946 and 1956 he employed Portsmouth FC players to help shift timber which had arrived at Portsmouth.
