The slowdown in the construction market has forced the cancellation of THE Conference for all builders merchants and building material suppliers for 2009.
The conference would have been at Costa de la Luz in Spain at the end of June.
A statement on behalf of the joint organisers says: “As co-organisers of THE Conference, we are very concerned to deliver an event which meets both the business and social needs of our merchant members, and which delivers a valuable networking experience for our sponsoring suppliers. Many delegates – both merchants and suppliers – have told us they feel a three-night trip overseas would be impossible to justify in the light of the present economic climate. So we have reluctantly cancelled our option on the Costa de la Luz for 2009.
“We know this news will be a disappointment to many in the trade, and we have spent the last month or so discussing the viability of various less ambitious models which might have enabled us to keep the momentum going through 2009. But with no sign of the market improving any time soon, we seriously believe the majority of merchants will wish to spend their time as close as possible to their customers and their business next year.”
With no conference in 2009, the organisers are stressing that they will use the time to review feedback from the last four events in order to provide the best possible product once market conditions begin to improve.
A provisional booking has been made for Costa de la Luz, June 26-29 2010.
THE Conference is an all-industry event, run by Builders Merchants Federation, National Merchant Buying Society, United Merchants plc and Builders Merchants Journal.
