South Coast Building Supplies adds third site

Independent builders merchant South Coast Building Supplies has opened a third site in Hampshire, just six years after setting up.
South Coast Building Supplies has bought and redeveloped a former car showroom and forecourt in Winchester Road, Southampton, after securing a loan from NatWest.

The business was saved from administration in August 2008 when owner Gary Ellis bought it. The company has a site at Dibles Wharf in Southampton and a depot in Bournemouth.

The purchase and refurbishment of the Winchester Road site was funded through a £715,000 loan from NatWest, provided through the government’s Funding for Lending scheme.

Lombard, RBS’ dedicated asset finance arm, also provided £100,000 for the purchase of a new truck for the site, £35,000 for the creation of a mezzanine floor and for shelving and a further £22,000 for a VW Amarok pick-up.

Ellis said: “We wanted to buy premises for our third site rather than rent, as the rent we would be paying would probably be significantly higher than the interest on the capital payments of this mortgage.

“The idea is not to build the business up to five or six branches and sell out, but to build it up to that stage and keep it going. This is the story of a business saved during the recession and which we are continuing to grow.”
