Shropshire builders merchant closes

A family-run independent builders merchant, A Bertram Edwards in Shrewsbury, is closing after nearly 90 years in business.

A Bertram Edwards ceased trading on December 18, when all 21 staff lost their jobs.

The mixed merchanting operation, which traded from Belle Vue in central Shrewsbury, was founded by the present owner’s grandfather in 1919.

Charles Beaumont, managing director and Martin Williamson of administrators DSI, have blamed the recession for the lack of trade which was so severe that the company could not be saved. builders merchant has announced it will go into liquidation after 89 years of trading.

The firm will officially go into liquidation on January 15.
