Roofing manufacturer Russell Roof Tiles has taken a team to conquer the two peaks, raising money for Shropshire & Staffordshire Blood Bikes and Dumfries & Galloway Blood Bikes.

A team of 20 from the company’s Burton upon Trent sites, from across the management, administration, sales and production departments, came together with 15 from the site in Lochmaben to first climb Ben Nevis before tackling Scafell Pike, in the Lake District, the next day.

Bruce Laidlaw, production director at Russell Roof Tiles said: “This is our first major fundraising event for our two Blood Bikes charities. It was great to have staff from all our sites get together for it.

“By the end of the year our aim is to raise even more money to help towards both charities’ on-going needs for new motorbikes, satnavs and high visibility blood bike jackets to help keep them running. It means a world of difference to them both and indeed to us all and our communities to continue this lifesaving work.”

Blood Bikes charities offer emergency volunteer services providing urgent and emergency transportation of life saving medical supplies to NHS Foundations across their respective regions.

Currently local hospitals have little choice but to call a local taxi company to collect and deliver the blood and equipment. The hospital would then be charged retail rates for this “service”, which can cost hundreds of pounds per trip.

The staff at Russell Roof Tiles will continue to raise money for both blood Bikes charities across the year with activities including a sponsored weight loss, a version of “superstars” with 12 sports, a 20km bike ride plus charity, cricket, 1500m run, golf and football matches.
