Premier Forest Products Ltd, have begun importing Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified Whitewood from Canada this summer, fulfilling what the company describes as “an industry need for ethically-grown high quality softwood.”
Premier are importing 25,000 cubic metres of Whitewood from Canada via supplier Portbec Forest Products Ltd, who have recently invested in the transformation of their mill for export production.
Premier’s location in south Wales means they are well placed to receive the timber, as Newport is one of the closest UK ports to ship to from Canada and the company can supply FSC certified timber under their chain of custody certificate TT-COC-2162.
Premier softwoods director Paul Ford said: “We are fortunate that our location in Newport is the best possible place in terms of efficiency and shipping time to receive goods from Canada.
“Canadian Timber will be an important product line for us at Premier. The Canadian product is of the highest quality and will be very popular with our customers, as we can already see by the number of forward orders we have had. There is a limited supply of timber from the Baltics and Scandinavia at the moment, and the advantage of the Canadian product is that its availability and depth are so good.
“Portbec is a respected and reliable supplier who has invested a lot of time and money into making their timber highly competitive in terms of price and quality, and we believe this will prove popular in the UK timber marketplace.”
Paul Ford said: “We are looking at a long-term strategy when it comes to FSC-certified Canadian timber. We are sure that the quality and supply of this wood will be the most reliable in the market, as we have a good relationship with our suppliers out there. Although the shipments will come into Newport Docks, Premier will be selling the timber from both our Newport and Birmingham offices.”
Premier’s supply of FSC Canadian timber is available in regularised graded c16, sc24 and in lengths from 47 x75 to 47 x 225 and will be available from both their Newport and Birmingham offices.
