OFT to look into house-building industry

A new study, being carried out by the Office of Fair Trading, will investigate the UK house building industry, including regulation and competition.

The Office of Fair Trading has launched a market study into the UK house-building industry. It will allow the OFT to consider the potential competition and consumer concerns within the market and focus on two principal areas.

One is the delivery of housing – whether land suitable for development is being effectively brought through to the planning approval stage and whether land with planning permission is being converted effectively into homes.

The second is the homebuyer’s satisfaction with the properties available, and the study will look for ways to improve the experience of buying a new-build home as well as at the quality of those homes.

The study will examine how regulation and competition in the market might work better for both the economy and house buyers.
