More than 850 people attended the event at the Grosvenor House in London to watch performances by Beverley Knight and Beyond the Barricade.

The new NMBS Non-Executive Chairman Tim Allen said, “NMBS is showing positive growth of approximately 10%, and is on target to exceed £500million in turnover, in what is still a fairly flat market. Our turnover has been boosted by record numbers of new members and the addition of a few strategic supplier agreements.”

He also highlighted NMBS’ forthcoming office move, and the 2012 Conference being held in Marbella from 21st to 24th of June.

Allen also focussed on NMBS’ response to The Green Deal and he stressed how the society is working hard to provide a low cost and fully comprehensive response to the opportunities it presents for Independent Merchants.

“A special thank you must go to all of our sponsoring suppliers, for without their generous support this event would not be possible. Thanks must also go to the NMBS Management Board and Commodity Committees who help NMBS to build on our strength of electronic trading, low overhead costs and extra rebates and discounts for all members.”

NMBS managing director, presented awards to the winners of the I Love Independents campaign. This launched on February 14 2011 with aim of highlighting the benefits that independent builders, hardware & timber and plumbing & heating merchants offer to the professional tradesmen and end users

The award winners were:

I Love Independents Supplier: Makita, for showing their commitment to the campaign by sponsoring merchandise such as pens, posters and golf balls, along with producing brochures aimed at the professional tradesman emblazoned with the logo, which helped to raise the profile of the campaign.

I Love Independents Day Challenge Winner and Independent of the Year: Beatsons Building Supplies for the great open days that Beatsons ran on July 4 2011 at all four of their branches, which included product demonstrations, BBQs, one-day-only offers and family activities. The company also won the Independent of the Year Award, which was voted for by their customers.

I Love Independents Merchant Supporter of the Year: Martin & Partners who has been pro-actively highlighting the campaign through links on their emails and website, to holding charity carwashes whilst wearing ‘I Love Independents’ T-Shirts, and holding a family fun day – where the campaign was highlighted to all attendees and through local newspapers.

The prize from the main draw, sponsored by Makita, was won by Ray Dix from Calder, who went home with a complete Apple Bundle, including an iPad 2.

Guests also took part in a Silent Auction, with the proceeds going to the Rainy Day Trust, and a Table Auction of signed copies of Beverley Knight CDs which also helped to raise £3000 for Breast Cancer Care.
