Black Mountain Insulation (BMI), who makes insulation from sheep’s wool, was unveiled at this year’s Ecobuild exhibition at London’s Earl’s Court. Black Mountain are the first UK company to invest in a dedicated factory to manufacture natural wool insulation.
Natural insulation materials such as wool, are becoming more popular amongst specifiers and builders as they have technical and environmental advantages. For example, unlike man-made materials, when wool absorbs moisture it actually gives off energy, which warms the wool and prevents condensation. Plus it’s low-allergy, non-combustible and last for many years.
Plus, in light of growing concerns over energy costs and global warming, wool insulation is a truly sustainable solution to both energy consumption and the effects of climate change. In fact, it uses just 15% of the energy used to manufacture comparable man-made insulation, say the company. It is biodegradable in soil and easily recyclable, which BMI use to their advantage, by recycling all cut-offs to create a zero waste production process.
BMI chief executive Andrew Evans said: “Our natural wool insulation has been designed as a high performance direct replacement for fibreglass and mineral wool products, and offers a safe, environmentally-friendly alternative with many benefits.
“The interest shown in the company at the eco-exhibition shows there is a clear market for it. Natural insulation currently equates to less than 1% of the market, and this is something that we are sure will grow substantially over the coming years.
