Merchant warns of cheque fraud scam

The Builders Merchants Federation has warned its members to watch out for a fraudulent cheque cloning scam.
A BMF member contacted the BMF to say that he had been targeted by such a scam.

He spotted on his bank statement that two cheques with the same number had been passed by his bank as payment within a few days of each other.

The first (legitimate) cheque had been copied at some stage during its journey and the copy had been altered to ‘pay’ for another large, delivered order.

The counterfeit cheque had been passed by the cheque clearance agency and was of good enough quality to pass the bank’s own security procedures.
