Meecham sets up a new builders merchant business

Former Gloster Building Supplies owner Derek Meecham is back in the merchant business, and is opening as Buildit Gloster Ltd on January 11.
Meecham set up Gloster Building Supplies in 1984, then sold it to Buildbase in 2003 and retired. “But I got bored,” he told buildersmerchantsjournal.net. “And my golf wasn’t getting any better.”

Buildit Gloster is a mixed merchant trading from a 1.5acre site with a 20,000sq ft warehouse close to junction 12 on the M5. Meecham has re-recruited a number of former colleagues from GBS, and has renewed contact with many of his former customers. Buildit Gloster will open with a customer base of about 300, and is budgeted for sales of around £1.3m in its first year.

“Suppliers have been very supportive,” said Meecham. “We have talked to about 160 of them and only about three said ‘come back later’. And we talked to Unimer at Interbuild, and have been accepted into membership.”

Buildit Gloster is trading from Quedgeley Court, Shepherd Road, Gloucester GL2 5EL; phone 07836 388091. Meecham is planning a formal trade launch in February, once the business is fully stocked.
