MBE to headline BMF Conference

Builders merchants trade association the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has announced the theme and first speakers for its All Industry Conference 2013.

MBE to headline BMF Conference

Peter Hindle MBE, chief executive of Saint Gobain Building Distribution, parent company of Jewson, has been confirmed as one of the key speakers at the “Fit for the Future” themed event.

Also speaking are David Kilburn, executive chairman of MKM Building Supplies and Andy Williamson, group managing director designate of IKO PLC.

A fourth key industry speaker is still to be confirmed; the key speakers will each represent one of the four pillars of the BMF: multiple merchants, large independents, small to medium merchants and suppliers.

Delegates will then be invited to participate in an interactive Q&A session with the speakers.

John Newcomb, BMF managing director said: “The economic signs that we are slowly coming out of recession sets the theme of the Conference. More businesses fail coming out of recession than during a downturn. We want to make sure that the merchant industry is fit for the future, and companies are planning for the upturn and preparing to make the most of the growth opportunities it brings.”

Hindle’s career in merchanting spans four decades, having started out at branch level in Jewsons Fleetwood. He was appointed managing director in 1999 and in 2003, following Saint-Gobain’s acquisition of Jewson, he became chief executive for Saint-Gobain Building Distribution UK & Ireland.

He’s steered the company through the acquisition of Graham and Build Center and the development of Minster the specialist insulation and drylining distributor, and Greenworks. Hindle also established the Together programme, an annual fundraising initiative for Saint-Gobain Building Distribution UK & Ireland. He was awarded the MBE in 2010.

A former professional cyclist who represented Great Britain, he is now head of Saint-Gobain in the UK, Ireland and South Africa, representing around 10% of the Group’s turnover.

Kilburn started in the builders merchants industry in 1963, working with Crossley & Sons and Graham Group before starting his first business in 1985. He sold this to Harcros, and in 1995 set up MKM Building Supplies with a former Harcos colleague, Peter Murray

Williamson has worked for Henkel & Yale Chubb Union and joined IKO PLC in 2007 as sales director for Ruberoid and Hyload. He will succeed Roger Turner as managing director on the latter’s retirement in January 2013.

The All Industry Conference 2013 takes place from Thursday June 20th to Sunday June 23rd 2013 at the Tivoli Marina hotel in Vilamoura, Portugal.
