It is with great personal sadness that BMJ has to report that John Hauxwell has died, after a short illness.
He was a Liveryman and past Master of the Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants and a past President of the Builders Merchants Federation, as well as being one of the industry’s most familiar and most well-loved faces. When he sold his business, William Way (New Malden) to Travis Perkins, it allowed him to devote his time to his children and grandchildren and his wife Barbara and to his walking holidays.
BMJ Editor-in-Chief Fiona Russell Horne said: “John was one of the good guys. He was one of us. He was certainly one of the nicest, kindest men I have had the privilege of meeting. He had the merchant industry running through his soul, but never seemed to take it more seriously than necessary which made him enormously fun company.
“We will all have our favourite memories of John. One of mine is of being spun round by him at a BMF Scottish Region dance at the Trades Hall in Glasgow, his kilt flying out like that of a whirling dervish, during a particularly energetic strip-the-willow. My heart goes out to Barbara and the family for their loss, which many of us will feel keenly. Safe onward journey, John. You will be missed.”
The funeral will be held on Wednesday July 6th 6th July. at St Mary’s Church, Church Road, Long Ditton KT6 5HH at 1.00pm.
