Builders merchants Jewson want to see a number of measures introduced in tomorrow’s Budget to help stimulate the construction industry, says managing director Peter Hindle MBE.
The primary focus should be on stimulating demand throughout all sectors and new build is undoubtedly a critical factor in generating greater movement within the housing market,” he says.
“However we must not forget that 85% of the UK’s existing homes will still be standing by 2050 and therefore, investing in upgrading these represents a vast opportunity which, if addressed now, would boost the construction sector, support the government’s targets and contribute to the welfare of the UK.
“The government is in a position to support the refurbishment of the UK’s homes, possibly through a programme of tax measures and grants. From basic elements such as insulation to the incorporation of renewable technologies, improving energy efficiency must play a larger role in boosting the construction sector.
“The construction industry needs the government’s help; 2009 must be the year to get Britain building once again.”
