Institute develops practical skills

The Institute of Builder Merchants held its second event Practical Skills Building Challenge at its AGM in Derby last month.

Institute develops practical skills

The event challenged teams from Travis Perkins, Wickes, Keyline, MKM, Buildbase, Ridgeons, EH Smith and J.A. Stephens to:

  • Lay bricks including features

  • Fix plasterboard & apply plaster

  • Bend & install copper pipes, taps and radiator

  • Painting & decorating using innovative techniques

    within a set timescale.

The winning team was Ridgeons, with the runners up MKM and participants said they had had an “excellent day”, able to practice some skills as well as learning a lot about the products they sell.

Sponsors Builders Merchants Training Trust, Institute Charity Fund, Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants, Hanson Bricks, Buildbase, Wickes, Travis Perkins, JA Stephens Ltd, BMF, Quinn Radiators, Derby College, Hunter Plastics, Natural Paving, Keystone Lintels and F Ball & Co all provided support and materials for the build and goody bags.

Andrew Pine, Institute President said: “Derby College has been an excellent venue for the event – the team of instructors and organisers have done a brilliant job and the facilities are first-class. It was great to see the participants getting so much out of the learning process in such a ‘hands-on’ way, which also gives us additional impetus to further develop this aspect of our training agenda”
