Hanson close Measham brickworks two years early

Hanson Building Products are shutting their Measham brickworks in Warwickshire this month because the slump in brick sales makes it impossible to keep it open any longer.
Measham Brickworks had been due to close in 2010 to be replaced by a modern, £50million plant on the same site.

A Hanson spokesman said that they had hoped to keep the plant going until then, but the current economic climate has made it impossible, meaning they have had to bring forward the closure plans.

“It’s simply down to the slump in house-building. We’ve got so much stock on the ground right now, we simply cannot produce anymore.”

The closure means the loss of 50 jobs in addition to the 20 job losses already announced from the neighbouring Red Bank tiles and concrete chimney flues plant.

The new plant is on schedule and represents a major investment in the local economy. It Is designed to be the largest and most efficient brick factory in Europe.
