Fire at Chandlers’ Brighton Branch

Firefighters are tackling a fire at the Portslade branch of independent builders merchant Chandlers.

The  fire broke out this morning (March 16th). East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service updated on the situation at 11:48 : Crews continue to tackle a serious fire at Chandler Building Supply’s, Basin Road, North Portslade. There are now ten fire appliances in attendance, a further two have been dispatched from Seaford and Worthing.

Due to large volumes of smoke in the Portslade, boundary area, the public are being advised to keep windows closed and to avoid travelling into the area if possible. Traffic around the area is extremely busy and Sussex Police have implemented road closures around the area.

15:48 UPDATE: 

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service have scaled down the incident in Portslade. A fire broke out at Chandler Building Supplies, Basin Road, North Portslade earlier this morning and at the height of the incident ten fire appliances were in attendance.

There are now five fire appliances on the scene. Kingsway Road has been cleared of fire debris to enable Sussex Police to lift local road closures.

Whilst the smoke at the scene has significantly diminished, the advice is still to keep windows and doors closed.

A joint investigation between Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has begun to determine the cause of the fire.
