Independent builders merchant JT Dove has taken on a whole new team of trainees who are set to face an intensive training course.
The group consists of nine youngsters, aged between 17 and 23, and throughout the year they will be doing group training, personal projects, experience days, visits to manufacturers and a team building event at the end of this month.
Ian Hindmarsh, operations director, said he found most of the youngsters’ applications came through having family and friends already working for J T Dove.
He said: “Whilst the applicants had to have a minimum education standard of 5 GCSE’s, we are more interested in their personality and understanding of the Dove ethos. We like to grow our own and therefore have a high number of personnel who have enjoyed many years of long service.”
The top four performers at the team-building event in Glaramara this week will go forward to the Builders Merchants Federation Master Merchant Competition in July. The competition is made up of outdoor activities and will test the entrant’s team spirit to the full.
Some of the trainees will go on to join the branch manager course, if they do well on this first two-year course. At the end of the two years they receive a J T Dove Diploma and some will then be invited to the next step.
Paul Robinson, 23, who is one of the trainees taking on the course, said: “This is a great opportunity to fast track really good knowledge and secure a career within an excellent organisation. It’s the little incentives that make the difference, like the possibility of the cash prize for the best two personal project presentations – it drives you to work that little bit harder.”
Hindmarsh added: “It does seem an intense course but the aim of the programme is to complete the conversion from trainee to fully fledged merchant and to set each and every trainee onto a career which they can then develop to the highest level within the company.”
