Builders merchant helps out con victim

An old lady conned out of £4,000 by a bogus roofer has been helped out by staff and customers of Bradfords Building Supplies Plympton branch.
Mavis Chandler, aged 82, was duped out of £4,000 by a man who pretended to fix her roof in November.

Staff and customers of Bradfords Building Supplies Ltd were so appalled after reading of the crime that they raised £150 from a whip-round to give to the victim.

The rogue trader who is being hunted by police, took the large sum of cash but then returned the following day demanding even more, alerting her to call the police.

Julie Waterfield of Bradfords said: “We were disgusted. Our builders are not rogues and we were shocked that someone could ever do such a thing.”

Three other Plymouth-based building firms have also helped out the retired teacher by replacing her garage roof for free.
