Yardman Brian O’Neill, driver Michael McDowell and assistant branch manager John Boyle of Islay Buildbase in Scotland took up the Splash for Cash challenge, joining dozens of other brave souls to jump 10 foot off Lagavulin Pier.

“They were piped down the pier before the jump and went one after another,” says Angela Kelly, branch administrator. “The weather had ‘warmed up’ a bit from minus two to plus two, but the water must’ve been freezing.

“All the men can swim and there was a rescue team just in case, but it was a very daunting prospect, looking down at the water. After they climbed out they were given hot soup and a wee dram! They were very relieved when it was over but are now saying they would do it again.”

It was the 10th Splash for Cash event that had been staged but the first time that the men had taken part. The trio raised a fantastic £870 for local charities. All funds raised were doubled by event sponsors, Diageo, who own three of the local distilleries on the island including Lagavulin. Wearing their bright red Buildbase t-shirts, Brian, Michael and John won the Best Dressed Team prize.
