British bricks sold to Abu Dhabi

A Lancashire brick merchant has sold 250,000 Ibstock bricks to a top-end development in the United Arab Emirates.
Bolton-based Lancashire Brick & Tile Ltd has shipped the bricks out to the oil-rich emirate ready for building work to start next month on a new hotel and shopping mall at a beach resort in Abu Dhabi.

Managing director Martyn Wells told buildersmerchantsjournal.net: “The UK brick industry has been very badly hit this last year and we’re glad that we’re able to put out a little bit of good news amongst all the doom and gloom.”

Wells, who has often holidayed there, has watched the development of the area and noted the large number of modernist steel and glass building. “We noticed a lack of traditional brick facades and decided to go and try and win some business as there are a lot of British architects working on big projects out there and we made some good contacts with them.”

The company is hopeful of securing some more brick contracts in the area in the future.

Lancashire Brick & Tile, described by Wells as a ‘brick broker” was established in 1990 and stock samples of over 2,500 bricks.
