Boris Johnson takes a bath at Bence’s

While the Prime Minister was visiting Donald Trump last week, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson stayed closer to home, taking a trip round builders merchant George bence & Sons in Cheltenham.

Johnson was on his way to an event in Gloucestershire and asked if he could have a look round a local business. Bence’s managing director, Paul Bence received a call from the local consituency party on behalf of Cheltenham’s MP Alex Chalk asking if Bences and its upmarket bathroom and kitchen showroom ‘Obsidian’ would be prepared to host him.

Johnson spent time looking round the merchant branch and the Obsidian showroom, chatting to Bence and employees and had a go at cutting a piece of timber.

Bence told BMJ: “We were extremely honoured to welcome Boris to our business. After George Osborne’s visit 18 months ago we certainly were not expecting another dignitary visit. We had the obligatory chat on BREXIT, he was extremely engaging with the staff and discussed his first business venture after university in selling kitchen mosaic splashbacks, which apparently didn’t last long. He was also enormously trusting when one of our designers took his phone to try out some new technologies in charging your phone wireless via a work surface.

“The level of exposure has been astonishing with both national & global reporters getting in touch with us as to why the Foreign Secretary dropped by and why he was standing in a bath!”

Chalk is no stranger to George Bence & Sons, having accompanied the then Chancellor of the Exchequer on his trip to the merchants in May 2015, in advance of the General Election.
