Youth is wasted on the young
Once again, the streets and parks round my way are filled with the happy, joyous sound of youngsters celebrating the end of exams, and looking forward to the start of the summer holidays.
My own celebrations seem a long, long time ago, but I can still remember both the heady feeling of the thought of a long, hopefully hot, Summer with precious few responsibilities and the slightly scary one of ‘oh my goodness what am I going to do with the rest of my life?’
We’ve long known that the builders merchants industry doesn’t get the recognition is deserves in terms of how good it can be as a career. Too many people tell us, rightly, that it simply isn’t seen as a sexy career the way computing or, well pretty much anything else apart from banking and estate agency, is.
The Builders Merchants Federation has been doing sterling work over the last couple of years with its youth recruitment campaign. If anyone knows how good this industry can be in terms of forging a long, illustrious and rewarding career it’s BMF chairman Peter Hindle. The Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants has been playing its part too, in encouraging young people to consider this industry as a career path.
Let’s face it, it’s not all about selling bricks or sweeping up in a yard in all weathers. There’s design, marketing, sales, management, finance, logistics management…the list goes on. Just look at the wide range of job titles there are in the BMF’s Young Merchants group.
Which leads me neatly onto…..It’s time to take a good look at the young people that we already have in the industry. At the massive amount of potential and talent that there exists already. Time to look at it and time to appreciate it.
The BMJ BMF Young Merchant Achiever Award is now in its fifth year. They were set up to recognise and celebrate the huge amount of talent we have already in the industry and to ensure that those people remain in the industry, encouraging others to join.
There is just under a month to go to the deadline, so get looking around the office and work out who your young achievers are. The entry form for this year can be downloaded HERE
