JT Dove build new merchant depot

Newcastle-based builders merchants JT Dove have opened a new merchant branch in Newburn, to the north of Newcastle.
The new branch will house the 140-year old company’s head office functions from the beginning of next month and the existing branch in Newcastle city centre will remain open as a collect depot until mid-2010 on a wind-down basis, says managing director Steve Robinson.

“We opened a branch in Birtley to the south of the city in January, while this one will cater to customers from the north,” he told buildersmerchanrtsjournal.net. “140 years ago when we started, the centre of Newcastle was a great place to have a depot. Now it’s been strangled by road system after road system. Very few of our customers actually work in the centre of Newcastle anyway.”

The branches in Newburn and Birtley will be able to cater for customers in the north, south and west of the city, while Robinson says a branch to the north-east would be useful, although “in the current financial climate we will probably concentrate on the existing ones.”

The 1.3acre Newburn site houses 24,000sq ft of storage and has a building section and a plumbing and heating section.
